Lions

Like lions
at a coliseum,
ravening
with bloody jaws,
it bites into soft flesh;
crunches marrow
from bone.

No one is safe –
We are without weapons.
It tears us all apart.

Our family
has become
chewed,
digested flesh
in the belly
of a beast.

Not whole.
Never again.

It pounds on the door
like a warden,
sent to collect
the rest of us
who’d fall –

New threats
every day.

Afraid to
open closets,
terrified
of what might be
hiding
in the trunk
of the car.

Bloody
and grinning
that split-skull smile,

ready
to drag us all
down.
