Polite Indifference

I don’t want to see
your made up face
smiling brightly
nodding appropriately
and mouthing
all the niceties required.
Miss Manners would be so proud !
The manicured hands
patting the perfectly coiffed hair.

I want to see the black
writhing thing that lives
beneath the facade.
Anger, hurt, disappointment.
I want to stare into
the murky depths of your soul
Hoping to eventually
see something
familiar staring back at me.
